Neena Gupta on rising divorce cases: ‘Today young girls are financially independent, earlier they had no option but to silently suffer’

Seasoned Bollywood actress Neena Gupta, who can be currently seen in Sooraj Barjatya’s Uunchai (2022), has always led her life on her own terms and conditions. She singlehandedly raised her daughter Masaba Gupta who is now one of the leading fashion designers in the industry.

For those not in the know, Masaba was earlier married to producer Madhu Mantena. However, the couple decided to end their marriage in 2019. The celebrity designer is now reportedly in a relationship with actor Satyadeep Mishra.

During a recent interview, Neena opened up about the relevance of marriage in today’s times. When asked about her opinion on marriage, she said, “It’s a very difficult question. Everybody around says it is rubbish in today’s time but I feel it is still important. Also, I don’t think there is an alternate institution.”

The actress attributed the rise in the number of divorce cases to today’s women being independent. “Today, young girls are financially independent and thus won’t take anything from a man. This is why divorces are happening. Earlier they had no option but to silently suffer. But I also believe marriage is such a good institution in many ways. So, I am really confused,” she said.

Meanwhile, Neena Gupta is presently busy promoting her upcoming film Vadh. Acclaimed actor Sanjay Mishra also plays a pivotal role in the film. When asked if she feels pressurized to know that the expectations of the audience from her have raised manifold over the past few years, she said, “Not at all. And it has happened because now I only do work that my heart says yes to, or that I am excited about. I feel if I am happy about certain projects, the audiences will also like it.”

Vadh releases in cinemas on December 9, 2022.
